st george

St George seems to be a highly popular person to have as a Patron Saint. England shares him with the Georgia, Egypt, Bulgaria, Aragon, Catalonia, Romania, Ethiopia, Greece, India, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Serbia, Ukraine, Russia and Syria, as well as the cities of Genoa, Amersfoort, Beirut, Botoani, Drobeta Turnu-Severin, Timioara, Fakiha, Bteghrine, Cáceres, Ferrara, Freiburg im Breisgau, Kragujevac, Kumanovo, Ljubljana, Pérouges, Pomorie, Preston, Qormi, Rio de Janeiro, Lod, Lviv, Barcelona, Moscow and Victoria, as well as of the Scout Movement!

Apart from all this patronage going on, he is considered a holy man in the three religions of the Book:  Judaism, Christianity and Islam.  Adherents of which all look to him to perform miracles, particularly in connection with madness.  (Perhaps that is why his flag was adopted by the Red Cross.)

Saint George is also one of the patron saints of Malta and Gozo. In a battle between the Maltese and the Moors, Saint George was alleged to have been seen with Saint Paul and Saint Agata, protecting the Maltese.   St. George’s Basilica, Victoria is dedicated to him and he is the protector of the whole island of Gozo.
