Last weekend an organised International Clean-Up took place around the Mediterranean area and Malta was part of this initiative.
In Mellieha, one of our Local Councillors, Dario Vella, coordinated the event with David Pisani of Let’s Do It! – Malta. Our own Charles Downing and Chris Emmett took the initiative to gather together a group of Mellieha BRA members. Several of our Members, among whom were Sheelagh and Terry Tearne, Sylvia Hooper and Lyn Jarvis and Doreen Collins, took part and they all worked very hard for nearly three hours at l-Ahrax tal-Mellieha headland. Patrick and Chris Emmet provided additional black bin bags and gloves for our Members. Their son Paul was also there together with a colleague, Valter, who hails from Estonia. Estonia is the country which organised the first Let’s Do It campaign in 2008. Valter is in Malta to assist with the production of a documentary on the Malta campaign, which included some 20 countries around the Mediterranean. Charles, as the leader of the Mellieha BRA volunteers, was given an orange T-shirt by the organisers which he had to wear over his clothes, throughout the morning.
Our Members, together with a group of volunteers of several nationalities, worked very hard all morning. The day had started cloudy and cool but became very hot and they ended up very tired and aching. A lot of the rubbish had been blown underneath the bushes and shrubs by the wind, so this meant a lot of stooping and bending by the volunteers to extract it. A skip had been provided and was totally filled together with many other black bin bags.
This was an excellent effort by our BRA volunteers and they certainly deserve a pat on the back for this initiative. Very well done all of you particularly those who initiated it!
