Brexit and You: Healthcare

If you’ve been keeping up with the media reports of the Brexit negotiations, you will know that much of the discussion has centred on EU citizens’ rights. The UK government has put this at the top of its priorities and I’m pleased to report that we’re making good progress with the Commission. In particular, both sides agree that we should protect the existing EHIC system for British nationals, young and old, living in the EU on the date of our exit.

This is good news and means that British residents in Malta can continue to use their EHIC card when they travel to another Member State after we exit.

This agreement and all others we are reaching are, of course, on a reciprocal basis; they work for Brits in the EU and EU citizens in the UK.

I and my Consular team will continue to keep you updated and I look forward to meeting you again to talk to you directly about how this is all going and how it will affect you.
